FEKED
Founded in the 18th century
History of the village
The village was founded in the first part of the 18th century by German farmers from the neighborhood of Fulda. The settlers that came to central Europe in the 17th century are named Schwabs. They speak Schwab (German-dialect) and have retained their own culture and architecture. The Swabian style of building is well preserved in Feked and is often named the “Swabian Holloko”. The Old Village of Unesco listed Holloko is a living example of rural life before the agricultural revolution of the 20th century. Just like Holloko the (small) Turkish castle and the former village Feket were finally abandoned at the end of the Ottoman occupation (1683) and the present village was later established in the valley closeby. It developed gradually throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
As was customary in the region, the first generation of inhabitants settled on either side of the main street. In this one-street village, subsequent generations built their houses at the back of the narrow family plots, thus progressively enlarging the built-up area. The barns were built directly behind the houses. The fields around the village had different with extensive wine yards. The Yards are gone but lots of the winemaking houses at the edge of the former yards still reminds of the time the village still made their own wine. Over the last 20 years the non-protected site has been restored and renovated by the proud owners. A very specific feature of the houses you will not find anywhere is the very high and narrow frontdoors with beautiful colored glass and lead windows above.
